Listening for the Echoes: heritage knowledges to shape fashion and design futures

OC.M members and friends are warmly invited to the Listening for the Echoes symposium, a 2-day, online, free event taking place on 1st & 2nd May.

The Listening for the Echoes: heritage knowledges to shape fashion and design futures online symposium offers a vital space in which to reflect upon a pluriverse of local knowledges and traditions, to gain insights into the ways that humanity has walked (and in some places continues to walk) more lightly on the Earth to create the clothing, products and artefacts that we need, sustainably. These approaches offer a stimulus to learn, dream, experiment and reimagine how, why and for whom we design and make, holding the potential to reconnect us to a natural world and to a distant past whose echoes we must listen for urgently.

Presenters from all over the world will share their research, case studies, projects and calls to action that…

If it's colonial, it's not sustainable

Via LinkedIn, I came across this post. It resonated. The perspective presented is one we have discussed for years within Fashion Act Now and it is the reason why we set up Our Common . Market. Apparently we were ahead of our time, but thankfully this core notion of 'radical fairness' is gradually becoming recognized as absolutely key to a sustainable future. This article points to care, community and justice as the way forward. It proposes that radical shifts in our thinking and ways of being are implied and that it will be hard work. The post presents it so tidily that I thought it would be useful to share with members old and new.

Mutualism another approach to commoning?

I recently came across the idea of "mutualism" from Sara Horowitz, author of Mutualism: Building the Next Economy from the Ground Up.

It seems to be another way to think about commoning with a focus on more structured forms of organising like unions, coops, and mutual aid networks. It also considers financial viability of such groups. I find it quite useful, here's a couple introductory links to the idea:

New Interview on the OC.M Journal!

Hi everyone, and welcome to all you new memebers! There is a new article up on the journal, my first Interview with textile artist Yasia Khomenko with photos by Dmytro Prutkin. Yasia hosts regular collaborative upcycling workshops and exhibitions. We talked about community support in times of crisis, why she turned her back on capital-F Fashion, and made the move from a commercial fashion designing to a community-based creative practice. Thanks, Yasia for this candid and inspiring interview!

This is so inspiring, useful, educational and moving, Lara. The power of community -- we always talk about it, but what you have recorded here is a stunning example. It makes one want to go out and join Yasia's projects.
